We Stand For…
The Constitution of the United States of America, which is the best plan ever conceived by uninspired man to assure freedom. It has at the same time released the creative industry of man while guaranteeing each individual, created in the image of God, life, liberty and property.
These keys have made possible the American way of life. Our standard of living and excelled freedom is not the product of selfish men, but the natural result of godly principles engrafted into our Civil Institutions by the Founding Fathers. Consequently, our Constitution is a landmark in man’s struggle for freedom. “We are the freest people since the time of Adam and Eve” is how John Adams put it.
The Constitution is the palladium of our liberties, the shield and armor of our freedom. Only to the degree that we understand and implement it do our freedoms remain. On the other hand, the rise of the welfare state in the last 100 years, creating “entitlements” for segments of our population, marks a sharp decline in Constitutional thought and, unless checked, will spell the end of our success as a free people.
I heard your broadcast this afternoon in Abilene. Paul Blair stated that in 1776 98% of colonists were Christians. In light of this, the many references to God in their writings & documents, and the fact that they prayed before their meetings, I find it odd that you state “conceived by uninspired man” in reference to our Constitution. I think you may want to correct this to “inspired man”.
Thanks so much for your response to my article Mr. Heirman and I hope I can clarify my comment in a way that makes sense and is brought forth in a manner that helps the Ministry of Jesus Christ.
The Holy Scriptures are “inspired.” By biblical definition this means that the words are authored, or overseen by God (2 Tim. 3:16, 17). This oversight extends to the very words of the original autograph texts (1 Cor. 2:13). This is miraculous inspiration. The very reason that we accord the New Testament an authoritative position in our thinking is because it is so authored. Men wrote as they were “moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Pet. 1:19-21) and they wrote things that they themselves did not fully understand (1 Pet. 1:10-12). For this reason there are no additions or subtractions to Holy Writ (Rev. 22:18,19).
The Constitution, though a great document reflecting genius and learning, was not so inspired. God’s providence may indeed have been involved in its production, and indeed I believe He was, but this is far from saying that God directly inspired the words. Even the founders themselves did not think of their production as on an equal footing with Holy Writ, which is why they provided for an amendment process by which their anticipated short-sightedness could be remedied through the decades by additions and/or subtractions.
